House or Home?

There is a reason that the English language has found a necessity to differentiate between the words “house” and “home.” A house is a shell – walls with a roof. A starting point. What differentiates a house from a home is what’s inside. A home is a personal reflection of one’s personality and family’s needs. By definition, remodeling a home is a very personal process that requires intense forethought and research which will influence how your family experiences their world every single day.

There are a great deal of factors and variables that one must consider when they make the decision to remodel their home. Some of the most important factors to consider that will have an influence on this positive experience include budget, time constraints (timing of holidays and other special events), and family needs. Each and every segment of a home needs that careful consideration. It is often the case that when one begins to plan to remodel a portion of their home that they are unable or unaware of all of the options available to them and the associated costs. It is for this reason that choosing the correct professional who will enable them to see their vision and dream come true is paramount. In a general sense, there are several options at one’s disposal. These can include architectural designers/contractors, big box stores such as Home Depot, or taking things into one’s own hands and seeing the entire process through themselves.

Over a 35 year career, I myself have seen each of the above-mentioned scenarios played out and have seen dreams come true and nightmares created. Oftentimes one will see something that they like in a Houzz, forum, or other type of media. What one sees and what one gets are often not one in the same. When things do not go as planned, it is much too easy for one’s budget and timetable to get out of control. Working with a professional who has seen it all before can help mitigate many of these risks. The correct professional will not just sell you a bill of goods, but will see you through the entire process. They will give you an organized set of plans that match your vision, propose an itemized breakdown of all of the costs and present an organized day-by-day schedule. They will not try and sell you on their vision, but instead try to make yours come to life.

The homes in our community are between 15 and 25 years old and have reached the point where an update is beginning to become a necessity. It is essential to properly prioritize which project to undertake.
