5 Common Mistakes During a Kitchen Renovation
Kitchen Designs and More • Mar 03, 2022

Remodeling any room takes a lot of time, effort, money, and, most importantly, planning! A kitchen remodel is even more challenging. While planning the remodel, there are so many things to keep in mind, such as floor space, plumbing and electrical, functionality, and design elements.

If you are about to get your kitchen remodeled, here are 5 common kitchen remodeling mistakes that you should look out for and be careful to avoid:

  1. Making Changes Once You’ve Started Remodeling

We cannot stress enough how important it is to have a detailed and fully formed remodeling plan before starting any work. The plan will dictate your floor plan, the materials being used, the time frame for the remodel, and all of the costs involved.

If you make changes once you’ve already started remodeling, you’re looking at lots of delays in getting new materials or contractors and much higher costs. It’s best to have everything planned out and have all of your materials arrive before you start working.

  1. Choosing Materials and Designs Impulsively

Once again, you’re better off making and sticking to one original remodeling plan. This means that you should make all your design decisions beforehand and choose the materials you want to use. In between remodeling, you might visit a friend’s house and fall in love with a certain aspect of their kitchen and want to recreate it in your own house. This kind of impulsive design decision can cause your kitchen to look incoherent and mismatched.

Additionally, all of the materials you decide to use should be brought home and looked at together to see if they work well together. Do your floors look good with the paint samples and the cabinetry you’ve chosen?

  1. Oversizing the Island

While you may have always dreamed of having a kitchen with a beautiful island in the middle, be careful about the island’s sizing. You want your kitchen to be a space that is well designed for quick and efficient work. If you have an island that is 10 feet wide blocking you from the other side of the kitchen and causing you to have to walk around it every time you need to reach the fridge or the sink, that would be incredibly inconvenient.

Also, keep in mind that a very wide island would mean wasted floor space and storage space. It would be difficult to reach so far back into the space under the island to any pots and pans stored there. If you have the space for it, consider two smaller islands rather than one very large one.

  1. Not Planning Aisle Spaces Correctly

Your kitchen aisles need to be wide enough to move around the kitchen comfortably without bumping into other people or the counters and cabinets. Another thing you need to keep in mind is that all of the appliance and cabinet doors should clear the aisle. This means that if you have your fridge placed across the island, you should be able to open and close the fridge doors fully without them touching or scraping across the island.

  1. Choosing Appliances Last

Leaving the appliances till the end is another kitchen remodeling mistake you’ll want to avoid. It is much easier to have your cabinets and countertops made to fit according to appliance size rather than buying appliances once the rest of your kitchen has already been fitted. This includes appliances like the fridge, freezer, stove, and dishwasher.
